How to Evaluate Any Panty by Its Parts Before You Buy

Check the gusset material first
Look at the fabric content label or product description specifically for the gusset. It should state cotton or cotton-lined crotch. If the entire garment is listed as 100% nylon or polyester with no mention of a cotton gusset, set it aside for daily wear.
Measure the gusset width
If you are shopping in a store, physically measure or estimate the gusset width. A gusset narrower than 2 inches will not provide full coverage across the vulval area for most adult women. Look for 2.5 to 3 inches minimum for full coverage.
Test the waistband elastic recovery
Stretch the waistband to approximately twice its resting length and release it. It should snap back immediately to its original shape with no lag or distortion. Slow recovery indicates low elastane content (below 20%) and predicts early rolling and loss of shape.
Run your finger along the leg opening elastic
The inner surface of the leg opening elastic should feel soft, not scratchy. If the elastic has a rough or wiry texture on the side that will face your skin, it will cause chafing during movement. Look for plush-back elastic or a smooth bonded edge.
Check the gusset seam finish
Turn the panty inside out and feel both the front and back gusset seams where the crotch liner joins the body. The seam should feel flat with no raised thread ridges above 1 millimeter. A scratchy or lumpy gusset seam will cause irritation at exactly the areas where the skin is most sensitive.
Match back panel coverage to your outfit need
Hold the back panel flat and estimate its width at the widest point. For fitted skirts and leggings, you want either a full-coverage brief back panel or a thong string. Mid-coverage back panels create the most visible panty lines because they create an edge line across the mid-buttock rather than sitting at the hip or disappearing entirely.
